Top 5 Reasons Your Car Won’t Start

Nothing beats getting in your car, turning the key and having nothing happen. We are use to the roar of an engine occurring with the simple turn of the key in the ignition, so what causes the engine to sputter or not turn over at all? There are a few main reasons that your engine likely won’t fire up. Your engine air, gas and an electrical spark in order to run, without one of these your car won’t be going anywhere fast. The main reasons generally are related to lack of spark or fuel. Here are 5 common reasons a car won’t start.

Dead Battery

Ultimately the most common reasons a car won’t start is a dead battery. Because the battery provides the initial electricity needed to get the car running if it is dead there will be no power available to get the engine to crank. Dead batteries are often caused by human error, but other things such as electricity draws can drain them.

Faulty Ignition

A bad ignition means there is not a solid connection or electrical pathway being created to transfer electrical power from the battery to the coil to generate the spark needed to start the vehicle.

Bad Starter

When you turn the key the car’s engine should start cranking. If you hear a click, or a series of clicks it likely means your start motor has failed.

Bad Alternator

The alternator is connected to a belt system that is spun by the turning of the motor to create electric power, which is then fed to the battery to keep it charged. If your alternator dies the battery will soon lose power as well.

Fuel System Problem

There are a few issues that could occur with the fuel system that could cause starting problems. A clogged fuel filter or a broken fuel pump both will restrict the flow of gasoline, which is needed by the engine in order to run.
